The case concerns a customer in the USA who drove 25,000 miles, equivalent to 4,000 kilometers, in one month in his rental car.
Unlimited miles
Like most rental car companies, Hertz offers its customers unlimited miles. The customer in question obviously took advantage of this opportunity as he drove 4,000 miles in just one month, equivalent to roughly one lap around the equator.
This means that he has averaged 137 miles every day for a month. Exactly how he managed to achieve this has not been communicated.

There, the customer and the Hertz employee discuss the definition of “unlimited”. According to the customer, it means “that something has no limits”.
The Hertz employee means that “we never signed anything that allowed you to drive 4,000 miles with the car”.

After an aggressive discussion, the Hertz employee gives the customer two options – pay 10,000 US dollars, equivalent to 107,500 kroner, for the “overmile” or be arrested.

American car website The Drive contacted Hertz in the US for comment, which, in addition to apologizing for the situation, said:
-According to the contract, the customer will not be charged for the miles. Our franchisee must review the conduct of its employees to ensure that customers receive the same experience regardless of which Hertz office they visit.
In other words, it seems like unlimited miles really means unlimited.
