The trial against Teo Kotnik and her partner Tilno Novak, who are on trial for causing the death of the accused’s less than two-year-old son, continued at the Celje court.
The trial of the 36-year-old continued before the Senate of the Celje District Court And Kotnick and her common-law partner, 40 years old To Til Novak. She was brought by judicial police officers from the women’s prison in Igo, he from the prison in Celje, as both have been in custody since last June 20 due to serious accusations by the prosecution. The prosecutor filed the indictment against the couple Jošt Jeseničnik. The most serious charge against the couple is causing the death of the accused’s less than two-year-old son, and the prosecution charges them with two more criminal acts of neglect and cruel treatment of a minor child, trafficking, possession of illegal drugs and possession of paraphernalia for drug trafficking.
They also sold drugs
Drugs, mainly heroin and the synthetic drug alpha-PiHP, which they also bought abroad (among others in Turkey and China), were allegedly resold in complicity to a young man who was already recovering from addiction with methadone therapy. She also allegedly allowed one of Kotnikova’s underage sons to use drugs, the prosecutor accuses them of. Both defendants are themselves drug addicts.
A cosmetic surgeon will testify in December
The continuation of the trial was closed to the public. The closest relatives of Tee Kotnik, her eldest minor son and his father testified. The court decided that the public should not be present even during the reading of the statements of two minor children due to the protection of identity and all other family circumstances. The court also planned the testimony of the cosmetic surgeon, with whom the accused was supposed to undergo an operation under anesthesia the day before the tragedy, but the doctor was held back. He excused his absence, so the court will invite him to testify at the next hearing, on December 5. The testimony of the surgeon is important for the trial because he could tell what kind of substance was injected into the accused for narcosis and whether it could affect her dizziness even a day after the procedure. According to unofficial information, the accused herself told the investigators that she had undergone cosmetic surgery.
Drugs were found in the boy’s blood
The shocking story unfolded on June 20 last year in the yard of a residential building in Sveti Lovrenec near Prebold. The child’s mother and her partner left or forgot the boy in a dark car for at least three hours that hot morning. “Due to the high temperatures, the child suffered heat shock. There was overheating or hyperthermia, bleeding in the brain and lungs, and as a result suffocation. He died of heart and brain failure between nine and twelve o’clock,” it is written in the indictment of the Celje prosecutor’s office. The prosecution accuses the defendants of grossly violating their obligations, as they took very poor care of the child’s hygiene and safety, and often did not know where they had left the child, as they were often under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Because they kept drugs in the house that the boy could get to, they put him in further danger, and during the autopsy it was found that the boy had in his blood the drug alpha-PiHP and methadone, which is used by those recovering from addiction from drugs. How methadone and the drug got into the boy’s blood is not known to the public. They also often put the child in danger when they drove him around. Usually, the BMW X1 car was driven by the accused, although his driver’s license was revoked eleven years ago, and he also has impaired driving skills.
It is not known what the two defendants said in their defenses in court some time ago, as their questioning was also held behind closed doors. The accused Kotnik, who cried several times during the hearing of the witnesses, otherwise defends herself at the trial with the help of a lawyer Andreja Glass. Defendant Novak is defended by a lawyer Andrej Janežičand the minor victim is represented by a lawyer Darko Zidanski.
