How the DS Automobiles project was born

The SM TRIBUTE project was born from a dialogue with the community of fans of the brand, who in 2020 had enthusiastically welcomed a series of sketches published on social media under l’hashtag #SM2020. These drawings, the result of an internal competition, demonstrated the fans’ strong connection with the distinctive features of the original SM, an iconic vehicle first introduced in 1970. Featuring an aerodynamic design by Robert Opron and a V6 engine, the SM was a concentration of technology and innovation. Its hydropneumatic suspension and unrivalled ride comfort placed it at the forefront of the French automotive industry.

SM TRIBUTE wants to pay homage to this masterpiece, keeping the iconic elements of the original alive but reinterpreting them with a modern design language. The new model features a two-tone treatment inspired by the nuance Gold Leaf del 1971a detail that unites past and present. The vehicle almost seems to float on the road, a tribute to the innovative spirit of the SM.

Iconic elements

Frederic Soubirouhead of exterior design at DS Automobiles, explained that the project was conceived as if the SM had been continuously evolved over the last 50 years. The muscular and aerodynamic lines celebrate the original design, maintaining a perfect balance between dynamism and efficiency.

Iconic elements such as the distinctive frontthe elongated bonnet and the reinterpretation of the historic glass grille with a bright 3D screenkeep the essence of the original model alive. The interior also evokes the design of the 70s, reinterpreting the dashboard and instrument panel with fine materials such as leather and ivory Alcantara, creating a luxurious and contemporary environment that pays homage to the legendary SM.
