dual-sim, second device or what else?

To separate your private and business life, you can opt for a separate smartphone for work, dual SIM or use the useful settings that Android offers. These are the possibilities.

Using a smartphone for work: these are the options

Because we are available all day long, there is a high risk that you will never really finish your work. You receive a text from the boss in the evening, or you read your work emails during the weekend. It is very healthy to keep work and private life separate, so that you can really disconnect from work.

That’s easier said than done, because you carry your smartphone with you all day long. Fortunately, there are several solutions.

Dual sim

With dual SIM you use two different telephone numbers on a single phone. To do this, insert two SIM cards into the device, or use eSIM if this is supported by your provider and the device. The biggest disadvantage of dual SIM is that not every device can handle it.

You must also be careful that you choose the right form of dual SIM. There is a difference between active dual SIM and standby dual SIM. With active dual SIM you can always be reached via both telephone numbers, even when you are calling. This is because two antennas are incorporated in the device. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and OnePlus 12 support active dual SIM. Please note the abbreviation DSDA, which stands for dual-SIM dual-active.

Most dual-SIM smartphones only support standby dual-SIM (DSDS), because the device has one antenna. If the antenna is occupied via one SIM card, the other SIM card will be temporarily inaccessible.

With dual-SIM it is very easy to switch off your work telephone number as soon as you do not want to be busy with work. The disadvantage is that it is also very easy to switch the SIM card back on, even when you are actually free.

A second user

Android offers the option to set up multiple users. In the settings of your smartphone, go to ‘System’ and then ‘Multiple users’. There you add a user.

This function is intended, among other things, to give your phone to your child to play a game, for example, without your child being able to access your other apps. But it can also be used very well to separate work and private life.

The nice thing about this option is that you get a completely new home screen. This makes it very easy to give the apps you need for work their own place. You can also set everything so that you only receive messages and emails from work on your work profile.

Smartphone for work: multiple users

Still two smartphones

If you really have difficulty separating work and private life, two separate telephones remain the best option. You can turn off your work phone at the weekend, or leave it in your bag when you get home. If there is an emergency, colleagues can always call your private number. Everything else can usually wait.

A disadvantage is that the smartphone you receive from work is often an older model. Compared to your private telephone, you compromise on speed and functions.

The right apps

Whether you use a separate smartphone for work or opt for a different solution: you need the right apps. We also list the best job apps if you are still looking for a job.
