First, the presentation of the composition of the future Commission in the European Parliament was planned for Wednesday, but now it has been postponed to next Tuesday, as Slovenia has not yet completed the process of appointing a commissioner candidate.
As stated by the spokesperson of the Commission Eric Mamerthe Slovenian government informed the European Commission that the Slovenian parliament will take a position on the candidate Marty Kos submitted on Friday. Only then will she be able to complete the process and officially propose the new candidate. Therefore, according to Mamer, the Commission asked the European Parliament to postpone the presentation of the composition of the future College of Commissioners to the leaders of the political groups of the European Parliament by President von der Leyen until the list of candidates is finalized. Von der Leyen will therefore attend the meeting of the Conference of Speakers of the Parliament next Tuesday in Strasbourg.
According to the original announcements, the president was supposed to meet with the leaders of the political groups on Wednesday morning in the European Parliament in Brussels, but this has now been postponed. Slovenia has not yet officially proposed its candidate for the position of commissioner. The government is on Monday after the resignation of the current candidate Tomaža Vesel nominated a former diplomat for this position March Kosbut before she will officially confirm her candidacy and forward it to Brussels, she must obtain the opinion of the competent committee of the DZ. This is supposed to happen on Friday.
It is expected that the President of the Commission will hold a conversation with the new Slovenian candidate before the meeting of the Conference of Speakers of the Parliament, but it is not yet known when. In response to STA’s question about a possible meeting between von der Leyen and Kos, Mamer explained that the president is or will be in contact with all candidates for positions in the Commission, as she wants to get to know them.
Vesel’s resignation came about after von der Leyen allegedly tried to get several members to replace the candidate with a female candidate, offering them a better position. The German politician from the center-right European People’s Party is working for geographical, political and gender balance in the Commission. Like the other commissioner candidates, Kos will have to undergo a hearing in the competent committee of the European Parliament, which is expected to take place in October, followed by the confirmation of the entire Commission at the plenary session of the European Parliament.
