Due to the cold weather, Trump’s inauguration is moved indoors

“There’s a strong arctic wind blowing in the country,” Trump said on the Truth Social platform. “Therefore I have ordered that the inaugural address, together with prayers and other speeches, be read in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol.”

The change in plans means Trump will not stand on the Capitol steps overlooking the National Avenue, where large crowds traditionally gather to welcome new presidents.

The last time the presidential oath was taken indoors was Ronald Reagan in 1985. He, too, moved the ceremony to the Capitol’s ornate Rotunda because of the dangerously cold weather.

Temperatures are forecast to drop well below freezing in Washington on Monday, with the wind intensifying the cold.

In his statement, Trump indicated that various dignitaries and guests will participate in the events at the Capitol. There will be prayers, Trump will deliver his inaugural address, and the national anthem will be sung.

Supporters will be able to watch the event live at the Capital One Sports Arena in Washington, said Trump, noting that he will also go there later.

The ceremony in the Rotunda “will be a very beautiful experience for everyone and especially for a large television audience,” the newly elected president said.

“On Monday, we will open Capital One Arena to watch this historic event live and host the presidential parade. After the inauguration, I will join the crowd at Capital One Arena,” Trump said.
