Dutch bicycles hardly ever come from the Netherlands anymore

Regular Dutch bikes will disappear anyway at Batavus and Sparta, where the last Dutch bikes will be made this summer. After that it will be over for those brands and they are not alone in that.

NOS reports that bicycle production is increasingly disappearing from the Netherlands and is being moved to other countries. For e-bikes, we do indeed see that a lot comes from China, but the Netherlands has also long since ceased to be the place for production for old-fashioned steel steeds without electricity. The parent company of Sparta and Batavus is moving production to Hungary and Turkey. Some bicycles are still being made in the Netherlands, but these are technically advanced bicycles that are not made at the two production locations, but in just one bicycle factory. That factory is in Heereveen and the merger of the production locations is accompanied by the loss of 150 jobs. Not only sad for people who are losing their jobs, but also the end of an era. The brands are now no longer being made in our country at all.

Dutch bicycles

Not only for people who work for these brands. It is of greater significance, because it was Dutch bicycle manufacturers who provided transport during the First World War: importing bicycles was unthinkable at that time. Although you would think that if you flourish during the First World War, you should also be able to cope with the corona period, this turns out to be different. This is a challenge, especially because of e-bikes. Accell also has problems and is taken over by an American company. Reorganizations follow. Parts are increasingly coming from abroad, but where assembly used to be done in our country, this is also increasingly done abroad.

It is therefore a rarity that you will soon have a real Dutch bike, even though we are a cycling country par excellence. It is simply cheaper and more efficient to have the manufacturing take place in another country. We have previously written about the e-bikes of these brands.
