Dutch hardware CEO Timothy Scheek is leaving Sonos. The speaker manufacturer acquired his startup Mayht more than two years ago for almost 100 million euros. Together with his brother Mattias, Timothy developed innovative speaker technology. Sonos uses this technology in its new soundbar.
Timothy Scheek founded the audio startup Mayht together with his brother Mattias in 2017. With that company they developed ‘revolutionary’ technology for transducers that convert electricity into sound. Their technology allows smaller speakers to sound better.
The Dutch brothers made speakers with two membranes, which were a factor of ten smaller and still sounded good. This was possible by mounting the parts in a different way, so that more space was freed up behind the speaker membrane. This allowed the membrane to move more and produce more sound, without having to increase the size of the speaker.
Used in new Sonos soundbar
Mayht’s invention caught the attention of Sonos, which acquired the Dutch company for almost $100 million in April 2022. As is often the case after such takeovers of startups, the founders went to work at Sonos, in this case as hardware executives. But Timothy has now announced his departure from the audio manufacturer in a post on LinkedIn. “After an incredible journey at Sonos, I have decided to step down from my role and return to my passion for entrepreneurship and innovation.”
The technology of the Dutch is used by Sonos in the new Arc Ultra soundbar. “I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together: integrating the Mayht team and technology and driving hardware innovation,” Timothy writes. His brother Mattias will continue to work at Sonos and has the job title ‘director of hardware development engineering’.
New startup
Timothy Scheek already has plans for a new startup and that company has nothing to do with speakers, he says Quote. “It’s a bit of old-fashioned attic work, but I’m already looking at hiring the first engineers soon.” It is not yet known what exactly the company is developing. Timothy recently said against Porsche that he would like to do something like Mayht again. “Developing another innovative technology for a specific industry.”
