Dyson has just announced the launch of its new high-end audio headset. Called OnTrac, this model aims to offer record battery life and exceptional noise reduction with a wide sound range. In terms of design, it offers more than 2,000 color combinations.
After the Dyson Zone air purifying headphones, the British brand offers a “more conventional” model with the OnTrac. This one is of the circumaural type, therefore encompassing the entirety of the ears and of course, equipped with an adjustable headband. The result of several years of research and development, it was designed to distribute its weight on both sides of the head rather than on the skull. The Dyson OnTrac headphones are available in 4 finishes with Aluminum, Prussian Blue, Ceramic Red and Nickel Black shades.
With a relatively imposing format, the Dyson OnTrac headphones offer more than 2000 customizable color combinations between the outer covers and the ear cushions. The latter are made from ultra-soft microfibers and high-quality foam ensuring both great comfort and passive isolation.
Noise reduction up to 40 dB and 55 hours of battery life
For its new headset, Dyson promises active noise reduction of up to 40 dB “across the entire frequency range”. From experience, we know that this does not cover the entire spectrum, but only certain frequency ranges, which we will not forget to measure during our tests. To achieve such a result, the brand indicates that the OnTrac uses a specific internal geometry and incorporates no less than 8 microphones associated with an algorithm that monitors ambient noise 384,000 times per second. Enough to stay in your bubble!
With the noise-canceling feature enabled, Dyson claims a battery life of 55 hours, aiming to compete with one of the longest-lasting headphones to date, the Audio-Technica ATH-S300BT (60 hours officially with ANC enabled).
This autonomy is possible here thanks to several batteries integrated into the headband while the power supply unit is, most of the time, placed at the level of the earphones. This feature helps to balance the headset when worn. According to Dyson, after only 10 minutes of charging, you can enjoy music for two and a half hours. The headset automatically turns off after 30 minutes when not in use in order to preserve battery life.
Finally, for the audio part, while most headphones offer a frequency range covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz, this one offers reproduction between 6 Hz and 21 kHz, according to Dyson. To help with audio reproduction at the extremes of the frequencies, the manufacturer offers technology based on the internal electroacoustic system and cutting-edge components. It can count on the presence of 40 mm diameter neodymium speakers, custom-made associated with a high-performance DSP processor.
Personalization with the App and control from the headphones
Bluetooth, the Dyson OnTrac headphones are controllable via the MyDyson app for iOS or Android devices that allows you to customize the audio experience with 3 modes: Enhanced, Bass Boost and Neutral, to suit everyone, depending on your preferences. In addition, note that the headphones have sensors that allow you to pause music playback when removed or resume once you put them back on your head. The headphones have a touch zone that is used to control music playback (play, pause, rewind, forward) or to give voice commands. To manage the volume, there is a specific button, identical to the Dyson Zone headphones.
The headset can act as a hands-free kit thanks to its microphones which, according to the brand, clearly pick up voices, aided by algorithms to limit external noise. Finally, note that real-time monitoring of internal and external volumes is done to alert in the event of potentially dangerous levels via live reports in the application.
The new Dyson OnTrac headset will be available from July 25 for a price of 499 euros. It will be distributed in Dyson Demo Stores and on the brand’s website.
