3D audio
There is movement in audio standards: Samsung, in cooperation with Google, is introducing the new “Eclipsa Audio” surround sound, which is intended to compete with Dolby Atmos.
In recent years, Dolby Atmos has established itself as the standard for 3D surround sound – relatively alternative and unrivaled. The South Korean manufacturer Samsung, in partnership with tech giant Google, now wants to change this situation: As the company explains in a press release for CES 2025, the technology called “Eclipsa Audio” will be launched in 2025.
According to Samsung, the new feature will be introduced in all televisions and soundbars released in 2025, regardless of their price range. In addition to the entry-level TVs from the “Crystal UHD” series, this also includes the new Neo QLED 8K televisions, which will be presented at CES 2025 from January 7th to 11th.
As Taeyong Son, vice president of Samsung’s research division, explains, the “innovation opens up new possibilities for immersive audio experiences and underscores our commitment to shaping the future of home entertainment.” This should be achieved, among other things, with the option for creative professionals to precisely adjust the audio data and thus develop the ideal spatial sound.
An initial platform with support for Eclipsa Audio is also available: As Samsung explains later in the announcement, the first videos with the new surround sound are coming to the YouTube video platform. However, it is not clear in the explanations how the corresponding videos will be visible.
