EDAY: How the Department of Defense is Using Data Science to Address Challenges

The major disruption of Dutch government services, which resulted in the temporary closure of Eindhoven Airport, was the result of a software error on one of Defence’s IT networks. It makes it clear once again that we are increasingly dependent on critical digital infrastructure. It will undoubtedly be discussed during the presentation by Sofie Berns, Head of Data Lab at the Ministry of Defence, at EDAY in early October.

The outage in the so-called Netherlands Armed Forces Integrated Network (NAFIN). This is a heavily secured network that connects 180 defense locations and is also used by data centers of various ministries and police stations. For a while there was fear that the outage was caused by a malicious party.

The Ministry of Defence is increasingly confronted with digital complexity and is increasingly working with experts in data science and artificial intelligence to enhance its capabilities. Berns will provide an overview of current projects and initiatives during EDAY, showcasing real-world applications of AI and data science in defence operations. You will gain insight into the ministry’s approach to integrating new technologies, the obstacles encountered in this process and the solutions developed to overcome them.

With a background in Public Administration, Berns has in-depth knowledge of government organizations. Before joining the Ministry of Defense as Head of Data Lab, Sofie worked as a Senior Consultant at Berenschot. In that role, she advised national and local governments on the use of new technologies for social issues. At the Municipality of Utrecht, she further expanded her expertise, where she led projects in the field of data infrastructure, among other things. At the Ministry, she continues her commitment to innovation and data in government agencies as Head of Data Lab.

EDAY will take place on October 3rd in the Kromhouthal in Amsterdam Noord. Tickets are here to order.
