(Editorial) Is Han Dong-hoon’s ‘Yongsan human reform theory’ necessary or should there be public pressure on it?

Targeting Myung Tae-gyun, Kim Dae-nam, and the trio
It is customary to make suggestions on personnel matters behind closed doors.
To achieve results, you need to change your approach

Han Dong-hoon, representative of the People Power Party, brought up the theory of personnel reform of the President’s Office in relation to the issue of First Lady Kim Kun-hee ahead of his private meeting with President Yoon Seok-yeol. Representative Han met with reporters at a campaign site for the Busan Geumjeong-gu Office by-election the day before yesterday and said, “I think personnel reform of the President’s Office is necessary to dispel the public’s concerns and worries about Ms. Kim.” Those around him say that Representative Han’s remarks were mainly aimed at former presidential office administrator Kim Dae-nam and political broker Myeong Tae-gyun, who have recently caused controversy. It appears that first lady Kim’s close secretaries, who caused controversy last April regarding the theory of ‘reviewing Prime Minister Park Young-sun and Chief of Staff Yang Jeong-cheol’, also had this in mind. The so-called ‘Gang of Three’ caused a stir by repeatedly confirming that ‘it was true that it was reviewed’ even though the official line denied it at the time.

Representative Han is continuously increasing the level of his remarks ahead of his private meeting with President Yoon, which will be held after the October 16 by-election. When asked on the 9th whether there was an opinion on Mrs. Kim refraining from public activities, Representative Han said, “I think that is necessary,” and the next day, regarding the prosecution’s decision to indict Mrs. Kim on her suspicions of involvement in stock price manipulation of Deutsche Motors, he said, “The prosecution is the people’s responsibility.” “We must produce acceptable results,” he said. From the perspective of the public, Representative Han’s recent issues all make sense. Considering the negative public sentiment toward First Lady Kim, it would be advisable for President Yoon to show a forward-looking attitude toward Representative Han’s demands.

However, it is questionable whether Representative Han’s raising of the issue is a politically mature and effective method. Unless the government is determined to engage in a power struggle, it would be better to discuss personnel reorganization of the President’s Office behind closed doors. From the Presidential Office’s perspective, Representative Han’s public remarks may be perceived as significant pressure. If you find it unpleasant, the conflict will deepen.

Representative Han has been criticized several times for saying the right things, but not being able to choose the right way. The same goes for the single unit issue. The fact that Representative Han requested a private meeting was reported in advance in the media, causing conflict between the two parties. At the end of August, regarding the ‘delay in increasing the number of medical school students for the 2026 school year,’ Representative Han proposed to Prime Minister Han Deok-soo and others a plan to postpone the increase in the number of medical school students for the 2026 school year. Afterwards, Prime Minister Han conveyed his position that it would be difficult to postpone the increase in troops, but Representative Han amplified the controversy by publicly suggesting a postponement of the increase in troops through Facebook. If he wants to achieve results from his private meeting with President Yoon and find an opportunity to turn the political situation around, Representative Han must also change the way he delivers his message.
