The new El Capitan supercomputer broke all records and became the best supercomputer. With a performance of 1,742 exaflops, it surpassed the previous leader Frontier.
El Capitan supercomputer with processor AMD The MI300A became the most powerful in the world. The system achieved 1,742 exaflops in the performance benchmark, which is 45% more than the second-fastest Frontier. Comprised of more than 44,000 processors that combine CPU and GPU, El Capitan is designed for nuclear explosion simulations and other scientific purposes.
The device has a staggering theoretical performance of up to 2,746 exaflops. The supercomputer will be used by the US Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for simulations related to the safety and modernization of the nuclear arsenal, as well as for the development of a new generation of ICBMs.
Technologically, it is a breakthrough. The MI300A processors combine the Zen 4 CPU and CDNA 3 GPU into a single package with 128 GB of HBM3 memory, reducing power requirements and increasing efficiency. Although Intel Aurora holds the title of the fastest system for AI with 10.6 exaflops for mixed precision, its benchmarks for the Top500 list have so far stagnated due to technical issues. AMD now dominates at the top with five of the ten fastest supercomputers in the world.
