- Smart electricity meters are starting to be used in the Czech Republic
- These enable the sharing of electricity and can lower its price
- Almost anyone can apply for them and they are free
Recently, an amendment to the Energy Act came into force, which allows sharing of electricity, which can ultimately reduce the price of energy, but for this you need to have a smart electricity meter installed. Companies, municipalities and households can participate in electricity sharing, they just have to meet a few requirements.
In the Czech Republic, you can now share your electricity
Most buildings have analog meters installed that do not allow data sharing and do not send any information to the distributor’s online environment. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is get a smart digital electricity meter that allows you to view all the data, such as electricity consumption at a certain time of day. Both you and your energy distributor will have access to this data.
If you want to share energy, you also have to generate it somehow, so energy sharing is only possible if you use photovoltaics. It doesn’t matter where you have it – you can apply the electricity discount in a location other than where the solar panels are physically located, as informed our sister site Elektrickevozy.cz.

Advantages of smart electricity meters
The biggest advantage of smart electricity meters is that you can access all consumption data in real time directly on the Internet. Thanks to this, you can influence your behavior based on this data and save a lot of money.
If you regularly have arrears for electricity with the help of these electricity meters, you can start looking for the most energy-intensive appliance in the household. Just remember what you did at a certain hour and then look at the website, where you can find the real consumption of your apartment or family home. In this way, you can find out which appliances consume the most electricity and, if necessary, buy more economical ones.
Just ask the distributor
Smart electricity meters are automatically given to everyone who buys photovoltaics, and Czech distributors want to install them at all collection points over time. You can apply for this meter directly from the relevant distributor, but at the moment be prepared for a long wait as there are a huge number of meters to be replaced.
Priority is given to those who consume more than 6 MWh of electricity annually. They receive electricity meters automatically, but other customers with lower consumption must apply for them themselves and then wait for the application to be processed.
