Slovak tennis players did not succeed even in the final appearance in the C-group at the final tournament of the Davis Cup.
They lost to Chile 1:2 on the hard court in Zhuhai, China, and took the last fourth place in the table.
Everything was decided by the doubles match, in which Norbert Gombos and Lukáš Klein lost to Nicolas Jarry and Marcelo Barrios Vera 4:6, 7:6 (3), 6:7 (5).
After losing 0:3 to Germany and the USA, the Slovaks no longer had a chance to advance to the final tournament in Malaga among the elite eight, but they wanted to say goodbye to the tournament with a victory and improve their position in the rankings.
The fate of the first doubles set was decided by the tenth game, in which Klein lost his serve. In the second act, the Slovakian tandem led 5:3, but the Chileans turned it around to 6:5 and earned three match points.
Gombos and Klein fended them off and forced a tiebreaker in which they celebrated their success. In the third set, the Slovaks did not use a match point at 6:5, and in the tiebreak they came up short.
Jarry and Barrios Vera converted the fifth match point at 6:5.
