There may soon no longer be an absolute champion in the field of e-commerce platforms, especially in the field of B2B. Says Sander Mangel, who in Emerce TV provides a clear overview of the most important e-commerce platforms active in the Netherlands. The video collection E-commerce Platforms: current trends and innovations goes live from 8 am.
‘Shopify has by far the largest market share in B2C, at the expense of Magento. Magento was once standard in this sector, but Shopify is now the first to be looked at. And what they don’t deliver now, they will deliver tomorrow,” says Mangel.
Mangel is the founder and Senior Solutions Architect at Open Commerce, a boutique consultancy firm specialized in e-commerce and digital transformation. With over fifteen years of industry experience, Mangel has worked with various e-commerce platforms such as Magento, Shopware and Shopify.
‘The Netherlands is doing quite well with e-commerce,’ Mangel explains. ‘We are tenth in European rankings, directly below much larger markets such as Germany, France and the UK. It is actually bizarre that we are so high, but it can be explained: we have a good broadband infrastructure and delivery times are short because we are not a large country. You can drive to the north of the country in three hours.’
Interesting shifts are taking place among e-commerce platforms. ‘Shopify is often suitable for your webshop with some additional development work. You see that they are now also tapping into niche markets, for example they have acquired ID%T as a customer for events.’
Magento is now part of Adobe and is particularly attractive to large companies because of its higher costs. On the other hand, Magneto open source seems to be coming into its own. “Adobe gave that to the development community.”
Mangel also identifies new players. ‘Optimizely is certainly not a new party, but has recently also started in e-commerce for both B2B and B2C. Akinon is a Turkish provider active in the Middle East that mainly offers solutions for marketplaces, which could be interesting for SMEs. They recently moved their headquarters to the Netherlands to really serve the European market. These new parties can ensure that you will have more specialists in the future, especially in B2B.’
The most important trends? ‘Especially on mobile, that has of course been going on for a while, but when something is shown on TikTok that you want to buy, you no longer want to switch to your laptop to order and pay, but do it on your mobile. AI is another obvious tool that is increasingly being used for personalization.”
