EnBW and REWE Group expand fast charging network

Partnership for electromobility

EnBW and REWE Group are strengthening their partnership: They are planning up to 1,000 new fast charging locations at REWE and PENNY stores by 2030. This should make charging electric cars while shopping even easier.

By 2030, EnBW wants to provide fast charging stations at up to 1,000 REWE and PENNY stores. According to the company, this corresponds to around one in six market locations in Germany. The cooperation between EnBW and the REWE Group, which has existed since 2021, will be significantly expanded, after only several hundred locations were previously planned.

Contribution to electromobility and CO₂ reduction

Dirk Güsewell, board member at EnBW, explained that the partnership makes an important contribution to promoting electromobility. The cooperation makes it possible to provide charging solutions for everyday life across all sectors and thus reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector.

Retail also takes responsibility for the mobility transition, added REWE board member Telerik Schischmanow. The charging points in the parking lots of REWE and PENNY stores are a central component of the company’s sustainability strategy, which also includes a greener product range and the reduction of emissions.

Fast charging with green electricity

All fast charging points that EnBW installs should be operated with 100 percent green electricity. According to its own information, the REWE Group has also been using green electricity exclusively for its branches, logistics centers and administration since 2008. EnBW’s modern charging points offer an output of up to 300 kilowatts, which means that, depending on the vehicle model, electric cars can be charged with a range of up to 100 kilometers in just five minutes.

Location expansion is progressing

Since the opening of the first shared fast charging point in October 2022, around 300 fast charging locations have already been put into operation, and a further 200 are currently under construction. In addition, EnBW is expanding its collaboration with the REWE Group to Austria, where fast charging points are to be built at markets such as BILLA and PENNY.

EnBW’s commitment to the REWE Group is part of the energy company’s ambitious goals. EnBW wants to build a total of more than 20,000 fast charging points in Germany by 2030 and is investing around 200 million euros annually for this purpose.
