Energy for Home and Electric Vehicle

With the launch of GM Energy PowerBank, the company offers EV owners the ability to store energy and manage it efficiently, with the option of integrating solar energy.

General Motors (GM)through its subsidiary GM Energyhas expanded its product portfolio for home energy management with the launch of PowerBank, a stationary storage system designed specifically for electric vehicle (EV) owners.

This new product offers the possibility of storing energy, transferring it from the electrical grid and, in addition, integrating with solar energy equipment.

With this move, GM Energy has also expanded access to its energy management products in all 50 US states, offering a versatile and modular solution for the growing number of EV owners.

GM Energy PowerBank Capabilities and Options

The GM Energy PowerBank is available in two variants, with battery capacities of 10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh. This flexibility allows the PowerBank to not only serve as a backup power source in the event of power outages, but also to optimize electricity consumption during peak demand hours, helping to reduce costs on the electricity bill.

Additionally, for those who already have solar panels, the PowerBank can store the captured energy, making it easier to use clean energy to charge electric vehicles or to power the home even when the EV is not present.

A highlight of this new offering is the ability to combine two 17.7 kWh units, allowing users to achieve a storage capacity of 35.4 kWh.

According to estimates by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), this would be enough to power the average American home for up to 20 hours, under ideal conditions. This solution is particularly attractive in areas prone to blackouts or where the cost of electricity is high during certain periods of the day.

Modularity and flexibility: Keys to success

Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, highlighted modularity as one of the differentiating elements of the GM Energy portfolio: “The flexibility of our energy management tools, combined with one of the broadest lineups on the market for vehicle-to-home (V2H) compatible electric vehicles, gives our customers greater control over their energy use.”.

This helps mitigate the impact of blackouts, integrate renewable energy options, and unlock additional value for EV owners.

The GM Energy PowerBank is part of the GM Energy Home System package, which also includes a PowerShift charger and a V2H enablement kit, offering a comprehensive solution for home energy management.

For those who have already purchased the V2H package previously, you will be able to add the PowerBank without having to change other system components.

Integration with solar energy and specialized support

For users interested in integrating solar energy into their homes, GM Energy offers a strategic alliance with Qmerit, a supplier specialized in energy installations.

Through this collaboration, customers can request site assessments, compatibility checks, and quotes customized for their specific needs.

This ensures that the installation is efficient and that the solar equipment is fully compatible with the GM Energy PowerBank.

All energy management and products compatible with solar energy systems will be able to be controlled through GM mobile applications, offering a seamless and integrated user experience.

The interface will allow you to manage both the PowerBank and the rest of the energy solutions in real time.

Pricing, installation and availability

While GM has not publicly revealed specific pricing for its PowerBank system, it has confirmed that installation and delivery costs will depend on each customer’s location and individual needs.

For those interested in more details on costs or installation logistics, GM Energy has made its GM Energy Live platform available, where product specialists can provide detailed advice to consumers.

In addition to this platform, the official page of GM Energy provides additional information about all products and services offered, as well as the possibility of obtaining quotes and estimated delivery dates.

Comprehensive energy ecosystem

GM Energyas a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motorshas focused on expanding its energy ecosystem, not only through physical products like the PowerBank, but also by developing software and services that facilitate electric vehicle education and resources, the expansion of public charging infrastructure and solutions of broader energy management.

This comprehensive vision aims to accelerate the transition towards a future with greater adoption of renewable energy and sustainability.
