Energy Week Western Balkans 2024 is a key event that brings together leading actors in the field of energy, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, strategies and innovations aimed at a sustainable future and a green transition in the region. Petar Šainović, director of Siemens Energy Belgrade, talks about the importance of this meeting for the energy sector of the region for our portal.

Energy Week Western Balkans 2024 is approaching, an event that brings together all the key actors in the field of energy in the region. What does participation in such an important event mean to you and what outcome do you expect?

– It is an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to actively participate in such a conference and as a panelist to speak about current events in this area. Given that the energy sector certainly has a leading position in the fight against climate change, such conferences play a key role in the exchange of knowledge, experiences and defining the direction of energy development in the region. This is exactly what I expect from this prestigious conference.

Among the participants are leading world companies shaping the green transition of the region, including Siemens Energy. What message will the company send to the other conference participants?

– The green transition is not a choice and we can achieve the set goals only through joint efforts. Siemens Energy is present in 90 countries and employs 98 thousand people, and it is estimated that 1/6 of the world’s electricity production is produced using our technology. What I particularly want to emphasize is our presence in the Western Balkans region, and especially in Serbia. Of the approximately 200 employees in Serbia, as many as three quarters are engineers. Our experts are currently implementing complex projects in Western and Northern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Our presence in Croatia is comparable. The mentioned capacities represent a huge base of knowledge and I hereby invite the participants of the conference to create the future of energy in the region together.

Siemens Energy is one of the leaders both in the global energy transition and in the region. Tell us more about the company’s projects in the Western Balkans and how it affected the improvement of environmental quality and energy stability?

– Our business includes production and transmission of electricity, as well as industrial solutions, with a focus on decarbonization and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. I would like to take the opportunity to mention the unique Competence Center for Industrial Solutions, which is part of Siemens Energy in Serbia and currently employs more than 100 experts in various engineering disciplines and implements projects around the world. This engineering center is particularly focused on the electrification of industry with the goal of decarbonization. We also implemented capital projects in this area in the region. In addition, among the projects in the region, I would like to point out that we are currently participating in the construction of a wind farm, the largest biomass power plant in the region, a power plant that uses waste steam from an industrial process and a unique highly efficient three-generation plant. All the mentioned projects aim to improve the quality of the environment. In the field of electricity transmission, we are currently participating in a large number of capital regional projects, precisely with the aim of improving energy stability.

Where lies the untapped potential of the Western Balkans for the production of green energy and how can the implementation of innovative technology from Siemens Energy help?

– First of all in people. From the point of view of Siemens Energy, I can say that professional knowledge is the main force that drives us. Our example shows that experts from this region are extremely sought after and successful when it comes to energy. This is confirmed by our Competence Center, which I have already mentioned, as well as the fact that in less than five years, we have increased the number of employees in Serbia four times. Also, there are ambitious plans for further development of the local team.
