The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said today that a major review of the United Nations is needed, pointing out that almost 200 countries in the world cannot be left in the hands of five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

He said at the TRT World Forum in Istanbul that the UN should be completely reformed.

– The world cannot be left at the mercy of five permanent countries (members of the UN Security Council). The fate of 194 countries cannot be left in the hands of one of these five permanent members – Erdogan said, reports Anadolia.

He condemned the system of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, according to which those countries can independently veto important decisions.

– The world is bigger than five – said Erdogan.

He added that the Russian-Ukrainian war showed the weakness of the international system.

When it comes to Gaza, he said that not only humanitarian values were tested there, but also the reliability of the global system, the UN, as if neither had passed the test.

– The end of this human tragedy, which has been opened due to the shame of the Holocaust, is a dead end, a disaster – said Erdogan, speaking about how the guilt of Western countries for the Holocaust forced them to refrain from criticizing Israel, which for more than a year, as he claims, is carrying out genocide in Gaza.

– Can we say ‘it doesn’t concern us’, in the face of Israeli aggression that endangers not only its own citizens, but also everyone who lives in the region. When there is peace, when we can live together in peace, why this blood, conflicts, war? If we don’t act today, when are we going to act – said Erdogan.

At the same time, he expressed the hope that the cease-fire between Israel and Lebanon will remain permanent, but also stressed that the establishment of a cease-fire in Gaza is urgently needed.

– It is necessary to urgently establish a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza before humanity has lost even more of its values. We are ready to do everything to stop the genocide in Gaza and open the door to lasting peace – Erdogan added.
