Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert F. Kennedy, dies at 96

Ethel Kennedywidow of former United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedywho was murdered in 1968, died this Thursday at the age of 96 from complications resulting from a stroke.

The death of the matriarch of the Kennedysone of the most important families in American politics, was announced by his grandson Joe Kennedy III, former Democratic congressman from Massachusetts and current special envoy of his country for Northern Ireland.

“It is with hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our wonderful grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke she suffered last week,” he said in a statement on social media.

Ethel Kennedy, a Catholic, leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Among his children is the politician Robert F. Kennedy Jr.who aspired to the Presidency this year as an independent but has ended up supporting the campaign of former Republican president Donald Trump (2017-2021), something that his brothers have rejected.

The Kennedy matriarch was a central figure in a family marked by tragedy.

Her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, who was a senator from New York and attorney general of the United States, was assassinated on June 6, 1968 in Los Angeles (California) while campaigning for the presidential nomination of the Democratic Party.

His assassination occurred less than five years after the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, on November 22, 1963 in Dallas (Texas).
