The European Commission may allow TikTok assign as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act. This is according to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
TikTok’s parent company Bytedance had filed an objection, claiming it does not make much money from European users.
The court said that TikTok has grown rapidly since its launch in Europe in 2018, “becoming half the size of Facebook and Instagram in a short period of time”.
With this ruling, Bytedance will have to meet all sorts of conditions. This mainly means that it must open up its platforms to competitors and, for example, enable interoperability.
Bytedance can still appeal the Court’s ruling.
