EU support for a “common future” with the Republic of Moldova

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on Monday welcomed the fact that the option to join the European Union won the referendum in the Republic of Moldova “despite the obvious external interference” and expressed the EU’s commitment to collaborate with Chisinau to “guarantee” a “future common European”, informs EFE.

“The EU is ready to support Moldova and work to guarantee our common European future for the benefit of all,” wrote Charles Michel in a message on the X social network.

After counting all the ballots, the support for the EU obtained 50.46% of the votes, compared to the rejection of 49.54%, a result that “reaffirms” the “commitment” of the Republic of Moldova on the European path, according to the president of the European Council.

The Republic of Moldova applied to join the EU on March 3, 2022, a week after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and obtained the status of a candidate country in July of the same year, at the same time as Kyiv.

The EU started accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova on June 25.
