EUROPEAN countries are buying record amounts of supercooled fuel from Russia, despite calls to ban Russian gas deliveries, writes Bloomberg.
-Regardless of calls to ban such deliveries, Europe is buying record amounts of supercooled fuel from Russia, the article states.
The agency points out that the quantities exceeded those that Russia sold through Ukraine until January 1.
– The situation highlights how difficult it is for Europe to sever ties with Russia, which over the past decade has established itself as a key supplier of raw materials to the continent, the article concludes.
The contract on the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory (concluded in 2019) expired on December 31. In the previous year, “Gazprom” delivered about 15 billion cubic meters of gas through this route, which is 4.5 percent of the total consumption in the EU. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated during 2024 that they do not plan to extend the transit agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier in December that there would be no more gas transit contracts through Ukraine.
