Europe gives itself one more year to fight deforestation

The pressure was mounting from all sides. The European Commission wants to give itself one more year to implement its anti-deforestation regulation. Validated in 2023 for entry into force scheduled for December 30, it must prohibit the importation of a list of products, such as coffee, cocoa, wood and rubber, resulting from deforestation. If the Commission’s proposal is validated by the Parliament and the European Council, it will postpone this obligation until December 30, 2025 for large companies and June 30, 2026 for SMEs.

Implement traceability

For several months, criticism has been mounting in several Member States and in certain European sectors, notably the paper industry. Many countries, led by Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil and the United States, have raised the same grievances with Brussels. Before importing into the European market, companies had to, with the new regulation, provide proof that their products did not come from a plot deforested after December 2020, using geolocation data and satellite images. The additional time should give them time to finalize their traceability system.
