BRUSSELS – European naivety could lead to the collapse of its industry, warned the newly elected president of the Committee for Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament, Aurora Lalik, in an interview for Euraktiv.
According to her, Europe needs to step up its efforts to strengthen its industrial base in order to compete with China and the United States of America.
She stated that Europe risks becoming a continent of consumers instead of a continent of producers. The world has changed and we no longer experience “happy globalization”.
“The United States is defending its economy, China too, we have to do the same,” Lalik added.
In her opinion, Europe lacks a comprehensive strategy to support green and digital companies and facilitate key public investments.
“It’s not about being protectionist per se. We just need to stop being so naive”, believes Lalik.
Her comments are the result of growing concerns about the state of the European economy, as the productivity of the European Union lags behind the competition, the level of investment is low, and energy prices are too high.
The growth rate in the European Union lags significantly behind economic growth in China and the United States of America. Tanjug
