European justice confirms the right of plant-based steaks to be called as such

Have plant-based steaks won the battle? The long Franco-French dispute over whether or not these products made from vegetable proteins have the right to use names traditionally associated with meat may well have found its legal outcome.

European judges overturn French decision

At the beginning of the year, a decree drawn up by the Ministry of Agriculture under the influence of the meat lobby drew up a list of names prohibited for these products. Representatives of the sector then requested the suspension of the text from the Council of State which, via a preliminary reference, turned to European judges, Europe being in principle competent in matters of names.

The Luxembourg judges ruled on October 4: “A Member State cannot prohibit the use of terms traditionally associated with products of animal origin to designate a product containing vegetable proteins,” states the press release in connection with the decision rendered. which motivates opposes any “general and abstract prohibition”.
