Evacuated boy’s lawyer: The boy’s needs have not been in focus

Late Thursday evening, a mother and her eight-year-old Danish boy landed in Denmark after being evacuated from the Roj camp in Syria.

The lead up to the evacuation has been a long process, where the boy’s lawyer, Knud Foldschack, and the association Repatriate The Children have fought to get him to Denmark.

When Ritzau catches the lawyer on the phone at noon the day after the evacuation, he is happy that the boy has come to Denmark. But there is also a but.

He believes that there has been no focus on the boy’s needs during the evacuation.

– We can be surprised that an evacuation has been carried out, where, in our opinion, the boy and his needs – in accordance with the Supreme Court’s judgment – have not been put in focus, says Knud Foldschack.

The Supreme Court ruled in August that the boy should be offered evacuation together with his mother.

The boy’s 27-year-old mother was arrested on arrival in Denmark on Thursday, and she was brought before a constitutional hearing in Aarhus on Friday and remanded in custody.

The boy was handed over to the municipality responsible for him.

Knud Foldschack agrees that there is a criminal court case against the mother, but he criticizes the fact that he has not had contact with the boy, whom he knows.

– I haven’t had the opportunity to look after the boy’s interests, he says and explains:

– I am not saying that the mother should not go to prison, but then you have to do the best to ensure that the family and network that he knows can step in and help.

Friday after midday, Knud Foldshack says that he has not yet had contact with the boy after the evacuation.

– I have been denied that, he says, but is convinced that he will probably get in touch with him.

But he wants to look forward, he says:

– We must of course make sure that this boy gets his rights fulfilled and treated in the best way possible.

The boy’s 27-year-old mother has been charged at the constitutional hearing in Aarhus with promoting the terrorist organization Islamic State and receiving training to commit terrorist acts.
