Volvo will keep the hybrid SUV in production as long as there is demand. The Swedish manufacturer is still not willing to give up the SUV equipped with thermal engines.
Even though the Swedish brand has set out to go all-electric in the next decade, with a portfolio of zero-emission cars only, Volvo has realized that, at least for now, the market still wants cars with thermal engines.
Thus, even though it launched the EX90, its high-class electric SUV, the manufacturer announces that the XC90 will be kept in the range and updated as long as there is customer demand. In the more than 20 years of its career, the XC90 proved to be one of the most popular models in the Swedes’ range, something that was also reflected in the longevity of the two generations.
The current generation of the SUV was launched in 2015 and there are no signs of it being withdrawn from the market anytime soon given the conditions.
The Volvo XC90 will continue to be sold alongside the EX90
Thanks to good sales figures, the company does not intend to give up the large class SUV anytime soon. right Auto Expressthis was confirmed by a company official: “We will continue to update the XC90 as long as there is demand. It’s an important car for us,” the brand official said.
Also, another Volvo representative stated that the two models can coexist, as the new all-electric EX90 is not a direct replacement for the current XC90. The manufacturer believes that there is a separate clientele for the two large SUVs.
Volvo chooses to keep the XC90 in the range mainly because it can offer alternatives. Those looking for a purely electric SUV will have the EX90 at their disposal, while customers who are not yet ready to take the step towards a purely electric car will be able to choose the XC90, which still retains thermal engines, offering different propellants – mild-hybrid or plug – in hybrid.
