Murder, mystery and romance: Everyone is talking about the new series “Perfect Couple” with Nicole Kidman

“Nantucket!” exclaims Ishmael, the narrator of Melville’s novel Mobile Dik (1851). “Look at it – just one hill, a cubit of sand; it’s all beach, no hinterland.” This very island appears in the latest Netflix hit “Perfect Couple”.

In Ishmael’s description, this island off the coast of Massachusetts in the northeastern United States is a worn-out, worn-out place, barely distinguishable from the sea. It is also a place of hard and dangerous work, where residents venture into the “water world” to catch everything from mackerel to whales.

The version of Nantucket we see in “The perfect couple”Netflix’s new six-episode drama, is completely different. Here they are super-rich members of high society, not sea wolves covered in salt. They engage in conspicuous lounging, lounging by the pool or going from one party to another. Even Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman), a very successful writer of popular romance novels, is most often shown holding a glass of wine with her fingers, rather than pounding on a keyboard.

Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 bestseller by Džena Lamia, and directed by Suzan Blijer (best known for directing the BBC adaptation of The Doctor, Night managerfrom 2016), A perfect couple combines romance and mystery.

What awaits us in the Perfect Couple

The Winberry family gathers at their beach house on Nantucket to celebrate the wedding of middle son Benji and his fiancee Amelia. A suspicious death occurs already in the first episode, leaving a tangle of erotic complications and forensic evidence that unravel from episodes two to six.

Many “relationships”, both permitted and forbidden, take place in A perfect couple. In contrast to Benjy and Amelia’s partnership, scandalous relationships take place within the family itself (many of which involve the groom’s father, Tag: a man who, according to the local police chief, has never worked a day in his life but has boundless energy for sex, drink and drugs).

All these connections and mixing between characters at the level of the story are symbolic, as is the series itself A perfect couple combination of different existing materials. It is put together in a way similar to making a cocktail, writes The Conversation.

Take part from Succession-a (for a family drama full of tension), part from The White Lotus-a (for glamorous scenography) and part from Big Little Lies(for the presence of a star like Nicole Kidman). Add plenty of elements from Rian Johnson’s detective films, Knives Out i Glass Onion (for murderous intrigues among the super-rich). Finish with a heavy dose of Agatha Christie: in the third episode, this influence is clearly indicated when Greer reveals that she had an “Agatha Christie obsession”.

The weakness of the series A perfect couple is, however, according to critics, only cosmetically reminiscent of those listed, failing to convey what makes them attractive or striking. It offers no equivalent for the surprisingly inventive language from Succession-a, for example, nor for graphic sexuality from The White Lotus-a.
