Sales of anti-Musk stickers for disappointed Tesla owners are boomingas reported by Heatmap News. Matthew Hiller, the creator of the viral sticker “I bought it before I knew Elon was crazy”said sales have reached record levels multiple times this year.
The political turning point of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is causing embarrassment among many owners of vehicles of the brandtraditionally associated with progressive and environmentalist values. Some shoppers are distancing themselves from the brand entirely, while others are looking for ways to publicly disassociate themselves from Musk’s controversial positions.
The original sticker “I bought it before I knew Elon was crazy” remains the best seller in Hiller’s online store. However, other variations have also been created with phrases such as “Club Tesla Anti-Elon” e “Zitto Elon”. Sales have reached peaks after Musk’s appearances at Trump rallies and the day after the election, with 250-300 orders in a single day.
The success of these stickers reflects a shift in public perception of Musk. While his controversial positions may have been more easily ignored by Tesla customers in the past, in recent months the CEO has emerged as a prominent Trump supporteracquiring greater political influence and media visibility.
On the one hand, the close relationship between Musk and Trump could bring benefits to the company in terms of government contracts and favorable policies. On the other hand, alienating a significant portion of your customer base could have long-term negative consequences.
Other electric vehicle manufacturers such as Ford, Rivian e General Motors they could also benefit from a possible large-scale defection of Tesla buyers. Whether that will happen in the coming months and years remains to be seen, as Tesla’s CEO appears to dive ever deeper into the political arena.
Meanwhile, “anti-Tesla” stickers appear to be the objects of desire for many Tesla consumers. Pretty ironic.
