We talked with Gábor Késedi, the former national team and current match analyst for Vasas, about the match against the Scots, which ended with a cathartic victory.
As Bernd Storck’s match analyst at the European Championship eight years ago, and since then working in the professional staff of Fehérvár FC and Vasas Gábor Késedi is late we will have a permanent expert during the Euro. The analyst asked us to make it clear right away, he is not a member Mark Rossi his staff, his insights and feelings about the game without attending the captain’s tactical meetings.
The analyst wasn’t panicking about Scotland’s possession dominance
“Not only because of the final result, but also because of the entire match plan, I say: the staff did everything well. All Marco Rossi’s decisions were correct, everything happened as our staff expected, and the fact that we only managed to score the winning goal in the very last minute does not change that”
– said the match analyst to the MOL Team.
He admitted late, when a few minutes before the blow-off Csoboth Kevin shot his position on the post, he was also afraid that it was the match ball, but he noted, “if you looked at the body language and metacommunication of the players, the substitutions or even Marco Rossi, it was immediately apparent that they unwaveringly believed in him, that there would be victory. They went all the way to the whistle and got the result.”
What is this passivity, please?
The fan can form an opinion without consequences or obligations, and in the forums and comment fields, it seemed that the Hungarian fans did not understand why the Hungarian team was apparently playing passively in the first half. Késedi stated: this was our game plan.
“Rossi knew exactly that, although the Scottish players individually do not represent a very high level, if the Hungarian national team scores a goal, our situation will become terribly difficult, so the plan was to defend stably, close the areas, and solidly and not let the Scots not even close to our goal, and if the opportunity arises, we try to cause confusion in front of the other goal with counterattacks.”
“If we manage to score, it’s good. If not, we will gradually take more and more risks, but only in the beginning! We did this with such success that the Scots didn’t find the back of the net and finished with an xG of 0.3, and needless to say, the Scots’ sometimes overwhelming possession dominance was also part of our plan. Rossi knew that sacrifices had to be made so that the opponent had no chance to score, so he expected discipline and precision from his players above all else.”

“He got this in full, our first line of defense already closed excellently, our attackers slowed down the Scots’ ball deliveries, and we sucked all the air from the Scots in the midfield. Even though they had the ball, they didn’t know what to do with it.”
We had to win this, we won!
Késedi said that out of the three opponents in the group, not only are the Scots the least qualified, but even their game suits us best. They have a well-developed passing game, they can build play, but they are not among the outstanding teams either in terms of individual ability or team level, and Rossi’s strategy has forced them into a situation that is very much not Scotland’s own.
Everything Rossi invented (photo: #retiphoto)
“They were unable to open up the Hungarian defense either in the rear or in the intermediate areas. The Scots passed more and more accurately, but if we look at the direction of their passes, we see that their dominance on the field was ineffective, and not only could they not create a situation, but they did not run to dangerous passes, and they could not even win free kicks. He sat absolutely, what Marco Rossi invented.”
“All our players deserve praise, even if not everyone’s game was spectacular, everyone put in the work, and without faltering we brought the game that the captain thought up for the match.
“It is characteristic of the team’s faith that it did not waver even when Varga lost Barnabás,” explained the Vasas analyst, with whom we also reached an interesting conclusion.
At quarter to one, Ádám Martin = Barni Varga
The chilling scenes when, sitting in front of the screens, we couldn’t know the extent of the problem with the striker who collided with the goalkeeper very unluckily, could have provoked various reactions from our players. According to Késedi, it mattered a lot that when Varga was taken down, you could already guess that it wouldn’t be a big problem, so the Hungarian players didn’t go into a state of shock, and they even drew strength from the fact that they were also fighting for their teammate for the remaining quarter of an hour (which was almost half an hour). And it arrived Adam Martin.
We experienced terrible moments (Photo: MLSZ)
“I’m not saying that Martin is the better player, because Varga to Barni he has skills that are absolutely top league level, such as his head game. But if Varga tires a defender for 75 minutes, and then he gets Ádám Martin in the neck, it presents him with a terribly difficult task. Catching him is a completely different type of defensive work, because he has such physical qualities that it is impossible to suppress him with his body, moreover, as an immaculate team player, he not only focuses on scoring goals, but also creates spaces, takes away the man, even people, opens up the area, keeps the defenders under constant pressure .
“And of course he can score goals, even if he didn’t succeed now.”
According to Késedi, it was not an ideal situation that we lost Varga just when we had to take more and more risks, and it is possible that – like the match against the Swiss – the two centers would have been on the field together. But Rossi knew exactly who he was selecting and why, and he really had the right man for every situation.
Who doesn’t ask for a leg
The tactical analyst said, Csoboth Kevin in the frame, he is the player who does not have to pass the ball to his feet, but has to run it into the area, and the character of the lightning-quick Újpest attacker is perfectly suited to the hectic, slightly floundering game of the last quarter of an hour.

“For Gula (Péter Gulácsi) had a statement in which he said, “the end will be open, because it has to be open”, and looking at the end of the match, we already understand exactly what he meant. Rossi also said that either team could have won the match, as the field was torn apart, nobody was paying attention to the midfield anymore, and there was real give and take.”
“Yes, although our attacks created chances and shots, the Scots could not pass through our relaxed midfield in such a way that it became a serious situation, and they ended the match with 0 shots on goal.
“But Rossi is right that when both teams throw the reins between the horses, anything can happen. Still, I think it would have been unfair if we didn’t win the match, because in the end we did a lot to win. Of course, uncontrolled, in fact, the last quarter of an hour was hectic, but in such a situation, when both teams only have hope of advancing, this is completely normal.”

Of course, Késedi can’t yet know whether Csoboth’s goal in the 101st minute means promotion (of course, he is very confident that it will be so), but after three games, who dares to declare who is the best Hungarian player of the European Championship.
“Roland Sallai he plays football furiously, I think he was our best yesterday as well – although against the Scots, you can give plenty of praise both as a team and as an individual. De Sallai stands out, determined and brave, while being precise and creative, and was also able to reevaluate his own role.
“Szoboszlai is being held very hard, and he also has a minor injury, and Sallai has realized that he has to take over the leadership role. But this is a subjective matter, I would rather say an objective one: in the attack that resulted in the winning goal, he did not even run towards the goal with 100 minutes of play left in his legs , but he slowed down for a moment before receiving Csoboth’s pass. If he didn’t stop, he would have been ambushed and we would have been eliminated.”
