Ex-MP beaten up, handed over to police for ‘blank shooting’ due to street altercation

The local mob beat up the former Member of Parliament of Nilphamari-3 Constituency Rana Mohammad Sohel at Chunarughat in Habiganj due to a dispute over a motorcyclist being hit by a car. During the argument, the former MP raised his pistol and fired a round of ‘blank bullets’, the locals said.

The incident took place at West Pakuria Khoai Bailey Bridge of the municipality on Sunday afternoon.

It is known that on this afternoon, former Member of Parliament of Jatiya Party Mohammad Sohail (58) got into a traffic jam on Chunarughat Khoai Bailey Bridge on his way from Srimangal to Satchari. At that time, when he tried to reverse the car, it hit the motorcycle standing behind. A motorcyclist was injured after being hit by a car. Both sides had an argument about this. At one point, Sohail raised his pistol and fired ‘blank shots’. ‘Gunshots’ cause panic on the bridge. Immediately people gathered around. At one stage of the argument with them, the locals beat up Sohail and handed it over to the police.

But Rana Mohammad Sohail denied firing blank shots.

The injured motorcyclist GM Shaheen (45) is the son of deceased Yunus Ali of Ushainagar area of ​​Satyajuri Union. He was treated at Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex.

Chunarughat police station OC Nazrul Islam confirmed the truth of the incident and said that former MP Sohel was brought to the police station with a pistol. We seized his weapon and 22 rounds of ammunition. He admitted consuming one round of bullets.

Habiganj Superintendent of Police Rezaul Haque Khan said that the army has taken him into custody. But why he fired, will be known after investigation.

Captain Samyun of Shahjibazar army camp said, ‘The incident is a misunderstanding. He retired from the army. But verification is going on whether the weapon is licensed. The matter will be informed later.’
