The social order to keep Putinists away from the ballot boxes clearly exists and is completely understandable, but the political parties who would gain the most from it want to take away the right to vote from all citizens of third countries, said Jevgeni Ossinovski, the mayor of Tallinn and deputy chairman of the Socialist Party.
At the same time, the capital is often thought of, Ossinovski stated in an interview with the radio program “Äripää opinion leader”.
“I know all those politicians who are now demanding the deprivation of the right to vote, hiding behind patriotic adages,” said Ossinovski, who led the Social Democratic Party and held ministerial positions in the past. “A very large number of them are exceptionally cynical people who actually have October 19, 2025 and the Tallinn election result in front of their eyes.”
The mayor meant that if the right to vote was taken away from all residents with Russian citizenship and gray passport holders, the Center Party would lose about half of the votes in Tallinn. Above all, the Fatherland and the Reform Party would benefit from this.
“These two political parties aim to win elections in Tallinn through voter manipulation. It’s actually deeply undemocratic, as I hope everyone understands very well.”
According to Ossinovski, he does not think that the proposal of the Socialists to establish a condition for citizens of third countries to register for elections and in the process to demand that Russia be recognized as an aggressor state is brilliant and does not deserve criticism. Its shortcomings should be discussed constructively, but he does not agree with the loud criticism of the plan. The goal of the Social Democrats is to fulfill the societal expectation to exclude those who are pro-Putin from the elections in a way that will not cause more damage, he explained.
More details can be heard from the interview. Karl-Eduard Salumäe believed.
