In the program Tarča on Television Slovenia, secretly made recordings from one of the Slovenian laying hen farms, whose owner is an important supplier to public institutions, were published. The videos show chickens with bare necks, rodents that have not been removed, e.g. mice, eggs were laid on one of the corpses. Experts were shocked by the recordings.

Public records show that almost 300 public institutions bought various foods from the breeder last year, but his name was not disclosed.

“Even if the animal is on the ground, not in the cage, but in the corridor, it is unacceptable. The carcasses must be removed. This is completely wrong for several reasons. It is a bait for rodents,” jthe former first food safety inspector told Tarča Andrei Bizjak. This is a bait for viruses and bacteria, she explained.

She warned of the risks if schools, kindergartens, nursing homes and hospitals buy eggs from this breeder. “A greater risk can arise here because it is a sensitive part of the population,” she warned.

Head of the National Center for Animal Welfare Ožbalt Podpečan said in the show when the recordings were released that he had never seen anything like it in his career, the president of the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry Joze Podgoršek however, he assessed that it was an individual case that was not acceptable. The vice-president of the Association of Non-Governmental Organizations for the Protection of Animals did not agree with this Only Curkwho said that it is always said that these are isolated cases, but that is not true. It is the fault of the legislation that sets such standards that allow this, he emphasized.

Director of the Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection Inspection Fabian Kos he pointed out that it was the first time they were seeing this footage. “The video shows a number of violations, so we will certainly treat it as a report, but we do not yet have the manufacturer and location,” he said. Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food Matej Čalušić stressed that she is disappointed by the shift away from responsibility and that this is not 21st century agriculture, but these practices are happening. That is why the ministry often decides on legislative measures that are negatively received by the public, but are necessary, she said.

Tarča journalists also obtained a comment from the owner of the farm and some public institutions that procure food from him. They also revealed videos of the company Jata Emon, one of the largest food companies, which has been claiming on the Internet for quite some time that it no longer has battery farming, but the videos deny it. As they informed TV Slovenija, they will correct the record online, but they still haven’t.
