Beer is a drink loved by many, which tastes best fresh and cold in the right situation – for example, after a day at work or as a relaxing sauna evening.

When consumed in moderation, beer can give you momentary pleasure, but experts warn that as you get older, you should look critically at your drinking habits. Excessive consumption of beer in particular can have surprisingly serious effects on health.

Why should you leave beer at a certain age?

Neurology Richard Restak writes in his book The Complete Guide to Memory: The Science Of Strengthening Your Mind that over time, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to memory problems, mental decline, and even dementia.

He emphasizes that people over 65 should avoid alcohol as much as possible, because protecting the brain’s neurons is especially important at this stage of life.

Restak summarizes:

“It is essential to abstain from alcohol at a stage of life where the preservation of neurons is crucial.”

Moderation at all ages

Although Restak emphasizes the avoidance of alcohol especially for the elderly, the recommendation does not mean that younger people should ignore the warnings.

The recommendations underline moderation: The level of moderate risk for men is 14 servings and for women 7 servings per week. In Finland, one serving of alcohol corresponds to 33 cl of medium beer (4.7%), 12 cl of mild wine or 4 cl of spirits. Risky use is when these limits are regularly exceeded.

It is important to spread the consumption of alcohol evenly throughout the week and to avoid heavy one-time drinks, which put a particularly heavy burden on the body.

Beer as part of a balanced life

Although experts warn of the dangers of excessive alcohol, beer can still be enjoyed in moderation as part of a social and balanced life. The most important thing is to be aware of your own drinking habits and their long-term effects on your health.

Age is not necessarily a reason to give up beer completely, but prioritizing your own well-being is especially important, especially as you get older. Moderation is always the best way to enjoy beer – both now and later.
