If action is not taken now, there is a high probability of famine in northern Gaza.
This is what a committee of experts in global food security warns on Friday, writes Reuters.
– All parties to the war must act immediately within the next days – not weeks. This also applies to those who have an influence on the conflict, says the committee’s message.
The committee, called the Famine Review Committee (FRC), consists of a number of independent experts who make analyzes of crisis areas where there is a risk of famine.
They warn that the disaster in Gaza will develop to new heights and become worse than anything experienced in Gaza so far.
The warning comes just days before the deadline set by the US for Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza expires.
The consequence will potentially be that the US reduces its support for Israel.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, between 75,000 and 95,000 people are still in northern Gaza.
– It is expected that there will be a significant increase in the number of people who starve and are malnourished. In addition, an increase in deaths due to malnutrition and disease is expected, according to the FRC.
UN officials last week described northern Gaza as “apocalyptic” and that “everyone staying in the area was at risk of death from disease, famine or violence”.
The amount of emergency aid to Gaza from other countries has fallen to its lowest level this year, according to UN data.
At the same time, the UN has repeatedly accused Israel of preventing and blocking emergency aid that was supposed to reach northern Gaza.
Conversely, Israel has accused Hamas of hijacking the aid before it arrived. Hamas has denied this.
