Sergio Perez has now also been publicly counted by Red Bull officials. The shaky candidate is still sure that things will continue for him with the ailing Formula 1 racing team beyond the end of the current season.
“These are just rumors,” said the 34-year-old Mexican on the sidelines of the race weekend in Brazil. “You’ll see me in Vegas, you’ll see me next year. I’m not worried about it.” With a view to the 2025 season and his Red Bull cockpit, which is no longer secure, Perez added in a “Sky” interview: “I know it will be me. That’s all I can say.”
Both team boss Christian Horner and mastermind Dr. Helmut Marko recently left Perez’s future open after his disastrous performance at the home weekend in Mexico City.
“I believe that we have done everything to support Checo and we will continue to do so in Brazil,” said Horner. But there also comes a point at which difficult decisions have to be made.
Formula 1: Who could replace Perez at Red Bull?
Marko bluntly confirmed several times that a separation from Perez was on the cards. “The drop in the constructors’ championship to third place, the 200 points behind Max Verstappen, all of this speaks volumes. We are currently evaluating everything. Decisions will only be made after Abu Dhabi,” he told the “Kleine Zeitung”.
Perez has been driving for Red Bull since 2021 and alongside Verstappen, who may soon have a new teammate.
Williams talent Franco Colapinto is one of the candidates. Horner recently described him as an interesting driver in “Auto, Motor und Sport”. “I would be a bad team boss if I didn’t explore whether he was available,” the Brit continued.
