Rain messed up the timing of the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, which had several big losers. One of them, George Russell, can “thank” what happened to Mercedes’ bad strategy.

After Sergio Perez crushed the Red Bull, Russell was one of the first to drive onto the track. He managed to improve, but there was still plenty of opportunity for the others to overtake him. This happened, but he could no longer answer because he had to return to the pits due to the emptying of the fuel tank. “I don’t know how this happened. It’s a complete disaster,” said the Briton.

Russell says the team over-optimized things, calling them a clear flaw. The fact that their radio communication was not clear and unambiguous about the situation did not help the situation either. “We have to sit down and understand what happened. We had the car to fight for the top 3, I couldn’t stand here after Q1. Lewis also just made it to Q3,” he expressed his incomprehension. “I’m quite angry because we have a fast car and we can’t throw away opportunities like this.”
