According to the decision, four-time world champion Max Verstappen will have a new teammate for next year in the person of Liam Lawson, promoted from Racing Bulls.
The 22-year-old New Zealander was given a vote of confidence after just eleven Formula 1 races – however, how his career will develop will largely depend on how he will relate to Max Verstappen. The team’s advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko spoke, who warned Lawson in his interview with Sport.de that he had better accept that the Dutchman is the best in the current field, so that his goal should not be to beat him.
“Both in the time trials and in the races, you must stay within three tenths of a second compared to Max,” said Marko, whose words the RacingNews365.com quoted. “This will be enough to collect points in the Constructors’ Championship as well. He has to gradually improve as much as he can, but at the same time he has to keep in mind that he is driving alongside the best driver in Formula 1 right now.”
“He shouldn’t get into the technical side of things that former teammates got into. For example, in the settings or strategy,” continued the 81-year-old specialist. “Liam has to accept that Verstappen is the best. We’ll see how close he can get to him, but he can’t get into the car with the goal of beating Verstappen. So far, this has gone badly for all of his teammates.”
