No one really challenged Lando Norris in the sprint qualifying for the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix. McLaren’s Briton was fast on both medium and soft tires, and although the team didn’t get the first row, they can certainly be happy that they overtook championship rival Ferrari with both cars. Norris was asked after the sprint qualifying by former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe.
“It was hard because the track is very fast, it feels like one of the fastest in the season, in the last sector you just try to hold on. Qualifying was great, especially coming back to the lead after Vegas, I’m happy,” said Norris. “My nail was good, but I made too many mistakes in the second one. However, we came to get pole, and we did it, we did our job.”
“The wind plays a big role here, but the conditions are generally better than last year. Physically, it is now much more difficult, but we are also much faster. It is a challenge to put together a good lap, especially since the tires are not good at the beginning, and we only gain confidence as we go.”
“I want to win,” Norris looked ahead to the sprint. “We drivers want to win everything. Our goal is McLaren 1-2, we want to maximize our points in the Constructors’ Championship. We know there will be battles. Mercedes is fast, so will Ferrari. I don’t expect it to be an easy race, but it probably will be for the viewers. I’m looking forward to tomorrow!”
The Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix will continue with the sprint on Saturday at 15:00 Hungarian time. The timing starts at 19:00, which determines the order of the race starting at 17:00 on Sunday.
