After winning the Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships, Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut with the Haas team in 2021, but the son of the seven-time world champion legend didn’t really shine.
The German driver was rarely really competitive, and with his car breakdowns that continued in his second season, he caused so many losses to the small team that he was sent away instead. Schumacher got an F1 job as Mercedes’ reserve, but he was not offered a driver’s seat there when it became clear that Lewis Hamilton was leaving at the end of the year, nor was he offered a racing opportunity at Williams, Alpine and Sauber.
The 25-year-old German, who is currently the leader of the Alpine WEC team, expressed his disappointment with the F1 opportunities in a message on Instagram on Monday.
“Life doesn’t always turn out the way we want, sometimes it’s hard to accept difficulties. Every challenge is also an opportunity for learning and development, an opportunity to come back even stronger. This is just a chapter, not the whole story. The journey continues, I am determined to move on” he wrote.
Although there is no mention of a permanent resignation in the above, according to the German Bild, it is a very real possibility that Schumacher will not only no longer participate in Formula 1 as a driver, but may even lose his job as a Mercedes reserve.
The reason is that 2025 will be the last season in which cars according to the current rules will enter the race, Schumacher will no longer have any relevant experience with the new generation racing machines in 2026, the paper points out.
