Face recognition functions are added to Facebook and Instagram –

Meta is taking another important step to reduce fraud.

More than three years after Meta shut down Facebook’s facial recognition system amid strong objections, it is now re-introducing functions based on it on the platforms under its supervision. With the new tools, the company primarily wants to minimize fraud and abuse, as well as help users who have lost access to their accounts.

For example, one of the new features uses facial recognition to detect ads that try to trick users with images of celebrities or other public figures.

“If our systems suspect that an ad containing a public figure’s face may be a scam, we use our facial recognition technology to compare the face in the ad with the celebrity’s Facebook or Instagram profile picture. If we identify a match and confirm that the ad is a fraud, we block it that.”

– reads the Meta in his blog post.

The company has already made the feature available to “a small group of celebrities and public figures” in principle, and will roll out to more users in the coming weeks. Of course, those who do not want to take advantage of this option can cancel it at any time.

Meta is also testing another feature intended to solve a long-standing problem with Facebook and Instagram: account recovery. To combat this, the company is experimenting with a new so-called “video selfie” solution, which allows users to upload a short clip of themselves that Meta matches with their profile picture if they’ve been banned from their account.

However, the tool will not be a solution in all cases. For example, many business accounts do not have a profile picture associated with them, so these users must continue to use Meta’s current account recovery options.

Meta emphasized that it immediately deletes the data used for facial recognition and does not use it for other purposes. The features are completely optional and users can choose not to use them at any time.
