Facebook and Instagram are blocking users. Better late than never

Meta, the owner of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has decided to block access to Russian entities. Specifically, institutions financed by the Kremlin.

It’s hard to believe that war in Ukraine has been going on for over two years. Initially, experts predicted a very quick victory for Russia, but Ukraine was able to resist them. This was partly due to good preparation for the war, and partly due to the support and assistance of foreign allies. At the beginning of the war, many countries publicly condemned the actions of Vladimir Putin. Many sanctions and restrictions were imposed on the Russian Federation, which severely hit the country’s economy.

It was not necessary to wait for private companies to join the international protest. Many of them immediately took action decision to withdraw from Russia. Those that decided to stay felt strong social pressure. Now, years after the war began, some companies have returned to doing business with Russians.

Facebook and Instagram block profiles supported by Russian government

Already in 2022, Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, decided to limit Russian media access to social media platforms at the request of the US government. The aim was to limit the disinformation that these entities were supposed to provide. Russia did not remain indebted and filed a lawsuit against Meta, which was found by a Russian court to be guilty of extremist activity. They were also banned from doing business there or opening offices.

Now Meta is expanding its restrictions and is going completely block financed entities by the Russian government. The action is aimed at such media institutions such as Rossiya Segodnya and RT.

The decision comes after the Biden administration announced Friday that the State Department called the media outlets “a full member of the Russian government’s intelligence apparatus and operations.” Although Russian media outlets already had limited access to Western social media, they circumvented it by operating locally. According to NBC Newsthere were allegations that they were secretly behind the propaganda platform “African Stream”. In Germany they were supposed to operate as the English-language “Red”, and in France they were supposed to bribe journalists.
