Favorite actor Keanu Reeves he can now also add the title of novelist to his CV. The Matrix star is set to release his first novel, titled The Book of Elsewherewhich he co-wrote with China Miéville, a well-known science fiction writer famous for books such as The City & The City and Perdido Street Station.
The book, out next week, is based on a comic book series written by Reeves titled BRZRKR. In the series, the main character, named B, is an immortal warrior 80,000 years old who has fought all his life trying to discover the meaning of his existence and end it if possible. The novel involves the US government, a 78,000-year-old pig, and ancient armadillos. Netflix is already adapting the BRZRKR universe into a series and feature film.
In an interview with the New York Times, the actor spoke more about the project. “It was important for us to approach this project in a way that would do something new, that would be very specifically literary in the sense of the use of the novel and the form of the novel, that would nevertheless be indiscriminately and joyfully a novel BRZRKR and to honor the source material,” Miéville told the newspaper. As an actor, Keanu Reeves was inspired to write the book because he considered it “another version of storytelling”.
Later in the interview, Reeves mentioned more about what was revealed during the writing process. He stated that through writing the book, he dealt with issues such as; “death”, “violence” and “technology”. In their conversation, the two men expressed an interest in continuing this story, possibly in a play or poem.
As for the reception, it is generally positive. The Los Angeles Times called the book “a deeply stylish and beautiful approach to the trials and tribulations of the ancient warrior who cannot die.” The 352-page book is already available for pre-order.
