Fake bomb threats attributed to Russian destabilization operations were sent to some polling stations in the United States of America (USA) today, which briefly disrupted voting in Georgia, one of the key US states for the presidential election, US authorities said.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was aware of bomb threats at polling places in several states, “some of which appear to originate from the Russian Internet domain”.

“None of these threats have so far been deemed credible,” the FBI said in a statement that did not specify which countries were involved.

The FBI urged the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The official responsible for the elections in Georgia, Brad Raffensperger, for his part, confirmed that the source of the false bomb threats in that state “has been identified and that it is Russia.”

Police and municipal officials in Fulton County, Georgia’s capital city of Atlanta, reported a series of such incidents that resulted in polls being briefly closed.

US authorities have repeatedly warned in recent weeks about disinformation attempts by “Russian agents of influence”, particularly in Georgia.

Presidential elections are being held in the USA today, where the candidates are Kamala Harris from the Democratic Party and Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
