We are often depressed and listless, and this is getting worse because of the early darkness. In such cases, we often tell ourselves that we are depressed, but this condition typically passes within a few days. We should be worried if we can’t get out of lethargy even after a long time. When can we talk about depression and what symptoms can lead to suspicion of the disease?

“It’s almost a natural state when our mood becomes gloomy in the gloomy, dark months that follow the summer sunshine. It’s harder to get out of a soft, warm bed, we’re listless, we lose the drive to do everyday things. But in the best case, we will get over this state within a few days. We should suspect a more serious problem if this process persists after two weeks or even increases, the mental symptoms are associated with sleep disorders, loss of appetite or weight loss. These are may indicate depression, which is one of the most common psychological disorders and the detection and treatment of which is the task of a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, he said Dániel Stoll, psychologist at the Buda Health Center.

What symptoms can indicate depression?

Unfortunately, the symptoms of the disease can be quite diverse, such as:

  • persistent negative mood (inability to enjoy, apathy, indifference)
  • inhibited thinking and problem solving skills
  • negative vision, and excessive worrying about the future
  • a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness
  • feelings of inferiority, permanently reduced self-esteem and efficiency experience
  • self-blame and constant guilt
  • concentration disorders, loss of sense of time
  • dealing with the thought of death, thoughts related to self-harm and suicide
  • occasional or continuous anxiety, which can also appear in the form of phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder

When can we talk about clinical depression?

In the clinical sense, we talk about depression when the complaints persist in a way that destroys the way of life and daily adaptation. The basic mood shifts in a negative direction, so you may feel that there is not a single day when you are good. The ability to experience pleasure decreases, a everyday becomes grayer, the future becomes hopelesst. You may lose interest in your surroundings, you may feel more tired than someone who already has no energy in the morning. He is irritable, gets easily upset over insignificant things, and tends to think more and more negatively about himself. The symptoms are often accompanied by appetite disturbances, but a particularly characteristic symptom is sleep disturbances.

How can we help ourselves?

If you suspect depression (even in milder forms), it is definitely worth seeking the opinion of a specialist. A number of psychotherapeutic trends are suitable methods of treatment for various mood disorders. In case of more severe symptoms, medical support is also necessary, in connection with which numerous scientific researches prove the beneficial effect and success of the treatments.

If, in the light of the above, we realize that it is actually just that our body has not yet switched to winter time, we can easily get through this period with a few tricks.

  • Don’t let the bed drag you back! When the clock rings, no matter how hard it is, let’s get up, move our body through a light exercise and take a refreshing bath.
  • After we are refreshed, a healthy breakfast can follow, which provides the energy and momentum needed for daily tasks.
  • For those who do sports, it is recommended to include exercise before work, as fatigue can already overwhelm us in the afternoon.
  • If we get up on time, we can even read a few pages from our favorite book, but the morning period is also perfect for spending quality time with our family.

“We can do a lot with small tricks to quickly improve our well-being and get over the negative period as soon as possible. However, if we suspect a more serious problem, do not delay visiting a specialist, because mood problems can be treated. The specialist psychologist or specialist assesses the nature of the mood problem with the help of some suitable conversations and examinations. Accordingly, the individualized treatment can begin in order to bring sunshine and happiness back into our lives as soon as possible,” added Dániel Stoll.
