Feeling too hot this summer already? Here’s what a heatwave could look like in 2050!

The heat wave in France will increase significantly in the coming weeks. But the situation could drastically worsen in the coming years, according to Météo France. The institution has carried out a heatwave simulation at the dawn of 2050According to the worrying map, a heat wave in 30 years will be “1.2 to 1.5°C warmer than the one we have just experienced, according to the ‘let it be’ scenario.” Concretely, if nothing is done to slow climate change, Temperatures during heatwaves could reach 44.1°C in Paris, 40.3°C in Nantes and 40.4°C in Strasbourg. It is in Nice that the heat will be visibly the least intense, with 32.7°C.

Heat waves more frequent in 30 years

In 2003, France experienced its most intense heatwave since 1947. Since then, the phenomenon has become recurrent and several heatwaves have been particularly significant, such as those in June and July 2019 and 2023. “Based on the heatwave benchmark since 1947, it is clear that the frequency and intensity of these events has increased over the past 30 years.” explains Météo France. If for a long time, the cause and effect link between global warming and heatwaves was not made, it is now clear that theincrease in greenhouse gases contributes to the phenomenon. Robert Vautard, interviewed by France Info, recalls that “The actions we take today to reduce climate change will have a very clear effect beyond 2050. The challenge is there, it is to reach either a 2°C increase by the end of the century, or 4 to 5°C. And there is a huge difference between a climate that is 2°C warmer and a climate that is 4°C warmer.”He cites as examples the extreme temperatures in Siberia and the heatwave in the Arctic in July. Temperatures reached 20°C and caused the sea ice to melt.
