Felix Magath makes waves with captaincy suggestion

After being knocked out in the quarter-finals of the European Championships at home, the German national football team is on its way to the 2026 World Cup. Who could be the DFB captain at the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico? Legendary coach Felix Magath has an exciting idea.

“From this team, I basically only see Robert Andrich (as someone) who could take on a role of responsibility,” said Magath on “At Broski – Die Sport Show”: “If he continues to play at the top of the Leverkusen team for the next two years and is involved internationally, then he will have gained enough experience to be able to play a major role at a World Cup.”

Andrich was a defensive midfielder at the last European Championship. The 29-year-old was only substituted on in the quarter-final defeat against Spain (1:2 after extra time). The sweeper has so far made ten international appearances.

In any case, Andrich has made rapid progress in recent years. The veteran ended up at Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 via 1.FC Heidenheim and Union Berlin. Last season, Andrich played a major role in the Werkself winning the double. The nomination for the European Championship at home was the logical consequence.

Gündogan currently captain of the national team

Ilkay Gündogan is currently the captain of the German national team. It is still unclear whether the 33-year-old will continue his career in the DFB team.

When saying goodbye to the team after their European Championship exit, he said to Gündogan, “see you soon,” national coach Julian Nagelsmann recently said.

“I was extremely pleased that he didn’t just face opposition for the first time as a national player. He is a quiet leader who has a lot of experience. He has a good feel for a group,” the 36-year-old praised the FC Barcelona professional.
