It has been reported that female shock brigade members of the Ryugyong Construction Management Bureau in Pyongyang were reported to have been arrested by the Pyongyang City Security Department after watching and talking about a South Korean drama. The city security department is also said to have held a closed-door meeting to discuss the issue.
A Pyongyang source told Daily NK on the 16th, “Earlier this month, a meeting on ideological struggle was held under the leadership of the city’s Public Security Department under the title, ‘Ideological Problems Occurring at the Ryugyong Construction Management Regiment. ’” “The meeting was held with the primary goal of exposing and punishing two female members of the Ryugyong Construction Management Regiment’s shock brigade in their 20s.”
According to sources, the meeting first exposed the anti-socialist behavior of two female assault team members, who were arrested after they were caught chatting about the South Korean drama “Queen of Tears” on the job.
These women, who graduated from the same middle school and were mobilized to the assault team and became close friends while always being together, secretly watched Korean dramas and movies together and had fun gossiping on set until they were caught by another female assault team member and reported to the youth league of the relevant organization.
The Youth League organization made a big deal out of this incident, and they were eventually arrested by the city’s security department in the middle of last month.
The city’s security department then conducted separate investigations for about two weeks, and the source said that the ideological struggle meeting was held early this month based on the results of the investigation.
The source said, “During this meeting, the two female assault team members who were pointed out as having ideological problems were immediately shackled and handed over to the preliminary examination department of the Public Safety Department.” The source added, “The city’s Public Safety Department strongly emphasized that they are dealing with the ideological laxity of young people and that they must make sure that something like this never happens again, thereby raising a sense of alarm.”
Meanwhile, the city’s security department also released a letter criticizing the secretary of the Ryugyong Construction Management Bureau Youth League at the meeting, the source said.
“This time, the secretary of the Youth League has also been put on the chopping block,” the source said. “He was criticized for not properly recognizing the direction of the judiciary and for making matters worse by publicly mentioning the title of the video they had seen in the assault team.”
It has been reported that the city’s public safety department has taken issue with the fact that unnecessary content such as the title of a drama was mentioned instead of simply criticizing the act of watching illegal videos.
“The city security department harshly scolded the youth league secretary for exposing the title and content of the video to the assault team members, calling him a pathetic author, while criticizing the two female assault team members and arousing the curiosity of other assault team members,” the source said.
Meanwhile, this newspaper reported last month, citing sources, that a first-level directive had been issued to provincial security bureaus and security bureaus across the country, ordering them to comprehensively analyze and grade newly emerging anti-socialist and non-socialist acts and handle them differently than before. The source explained at the time that this was a measure taken out of concern that the disclosure of the details of the incidents could cause ideological unrest among residents.
